Problem

Sociedade de Mutuali works with cotton farmers to whom it advances inputs on credit and from whom it buys first- and second-grade cotton, which it then transports, stores and processes into fibre at its factory. It needed to link each purchase to the farmer and their debt, and follow the cotton through to graded fibre.

Solution

In 2023, within GIZ's ProEcon project with COMO Consult, FAMS was rolled out end to end: farmer registration, inputs distributed on credit, purchases of first- and second-grade cotton with debt deduction, transport, storage, production and cotton quality grading.

Technical decisions

  1. 01

Debt is deducted at the moment of purchase

Inputs delivered on credit stay linked to the farmer; when they sell their cotton, the debt is deducted in the purchase itself, keeping first and second grade apart.
